Winning awards and accolades for their outstanding behaviour and excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities, our students are raising awareness of the importance of values and character education in the community. Their keen sense of engagement, discipline and public speaking skills endear them to people wherever they go. They have addressed rallies and assemblies about the place of the five human values in their lives. These include an Inter-faith prayer after the World Trade Centre tragedy, a welcome dinner for the Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and various other community and political forums.
Earlier this year they also sang and addressed an assembly of law enforcement officers about the five human values at a retirement reception for the superintendent of police. So moved was Superintendent Jim Bamford by the selection of songs, their enthusiasm, their smiling faces and exceptional talent
, that he hugged the speaker and shook hands with every child. He later read our brochure, visited our website and wrote a thank you note to Principal T.R. Pillay, saying the children represent everything good about our youth and they should be very proud of what they are achieving and accomplishing in the community...I am impressed by your mission statement, high standards and values.
Part of the pupil's experiential learning at the school is an active community service and outreach program. Students collect food items and warm gloves for the needy, and with their singing and hand-made gifts, they give joy to lonely Seniors in their lodges at Christmas time and on Valentine's Day. By doing chores just like their role model, Ryan Hreljac (Canadian child humanitarian and founder of the Ryan's Wells Foundation), the students raised a total of $8,800 (from 2000-2003). As a result of these efforts, the students now have their own wells in Uganda at Orsini Parish and Entebe village.
In February 2002, the students made an ongoing commitment to adopt a foster child - Murni Legowati, from Indonesia. Each month the students raise money through personal sacrifices to support her and her family.
In May, 2003 students raised $5,300 doing chores and making personal sacrifices for child victims of war in Iraq and Sri Lanka as part of their annual Children Helping Children Project held in the month of May. This is in addition to other service projects such as visits to seniors, collecting money for UNICEF, sponsoring a child in Indonesia, and collecting mittens in winter for the poor.
Academically, Sathya Sai students scored above the average of their provincial peers on the standardized testing for Grade 3 students across Ontario. As well, at a recent competition of the Spelling Bee of Canada, our students secured the first rank in both the Senior and Junior categories.
